Class Details

Join us for a marigold dye workshop. Participants can bring their own fibers to mordant and dye with marigold (up to 100g per participant). We will be using a mix of locally grown marigolds and marigold extract. Marigolds grow abundantly in Colorado and gives a lovely range of yellow colors on wool and other fibers. This workshop will be held along side our Crank-in. Come see the circular sock knitters in action and learn about the process. 1st day Feb 16, we will mordant the fabric. We will have an aluminum sulfate mordant that is best for protein based fibers (wool/silk). 2nd day Feb 17, we will dye the prepped fabric with marigold. We will be working outside (with heaters) so dress warmly. Participants are welcome to leave their fiber with us ahead of time for the mordant process. Contact us if you have any questions. About the Instructor Mel Williams moved to Colorado Springs in 2019 and has been working with farm educators and local community arts organizations. They have taught classes and workshops for all ages (kindergarten through adult) across El Paso County —at Manitou Art Center, Flying Pig Farm, and with Military Arts Connection, and they hold a Master of Arts in Art Education from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Mel’s education interests revolve around universal design in education, neurodivergent affirming education, right-to-repair and life long arts curricula. Their studio work includes fiber sculpture and print media, and they grow natural dyes at Flying Pig Farm in Manitou Springs.

Cancellation Policy

We reserve the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes to adjust for enrollment. If it is necessary to cancel a class, all registered participants will be informed within 48 hours of the start date given the opportunity for a refund or transfer to another class. A full refund can be granted if a student requests a cancellation 48 hours or more before the scheduled start of class.
